Given that the concern for biodiversity is integral to sustainable development, the European Commission has taken the initiative to promote the continued development of the EU Business and Biodiversity Initiative by cooperating with businesses, from SMEs to larger organizations in setting up a technical platform on Business and Biodiversity (B@B).

The EU Business @ Biodiversity Platform will work with the priority business sectors identified by the European Commission; Agriculture, Food Supply, Forestry, Extractive industry, Financial sector and Tourism to promote their awareness of and engagement in biodiversity protection.

Tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties - CBD COP 10 (18-29 October 2010, Nagoya)

Pursuant to decision IX/35, the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) will be held in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, from 18 to 29 October 2010.

COP 10 will include a high-level ministerial segment organized by the host country in consultation with the Secretariat and the Bureau. The high‑level segment will take place from 27 to 29 October 2010.

This meeting will take place during the International Year for Biodiversity (IYB) as declared by the United Nations General Assembly through Resolution 61/203. During the course of the year events will occur in every region of the world to raise public awareness of the importance of biological diversity to human well-being.

Strategic Issues for Evaluating Progress and Supporting Implementation of the Convention will be considered and it is anticipated that the negotiations to conclude an International Regime on Access and Benefit-sharing will result in the adoption of an instrument on Access and Benefit-Sharing.

Third Business and the 2010 Biodiversity Challenge Conference (30 November - 2 December 2009, Jakarta)

The overall objective of the Third Business and the 2010 Biodiversity Challenge Conference in Jakarta is to effectively engage the private sector in addressing biodiversity by stressing the link between biodiversity and core business and by highlighting best case practices, including life cycle approaches and incentive mechanisms. By emphasizing existing efforts underway, the event will explore ways to scale-up business engagement on biodiversity issues and develop recommendations on collaborative actions that can be undertaken.

Specific objectives include:

* To provide stakeholders a discussion platform for raising awareness, collecting feedback and supporting ongoing initiatives, to better engage the private sector in biodiversity related efforts.

* To provide CBD with private sector focused inputs to inform the COP 10.

* To provide UNEP DTIE with private sector focused inputs on biodiversity to feed into the GMEF.

Canadian Business and Biodiversity Program

The Canadian Business and Biodiversity Program was initiated from recommendations by both government and industry leaders who participated in a Montreal Business and Biodiversity Conference in 2008. The Program aims to help Canada achieve its biodiversity conservation objectives by assisting Canadian businesses that are prepared to show leadership in biodiversity conservation through managing their facilities and activities in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. Opportunities to demonstrate that leadership to a broad audience will arise during 2010 - the year of national and international accounting for biodiversity.
